So it's now been about a year and half since I took up photography so I thought this year for fun I'd look through my favourite images I took this year. I got to work with some great people, experimented with a whole bunch of new techniques and just slowly started to feel more comfortable with the medium. It was hard to narrow it down to 25 but I tried to go for variety here, so there are images I like that are very similar to another image on the list and I wanted to prioritize having a variation in styles.
Looking forward to shooting more in 2018.
100%
MODEL: AHD TAMIMI
I admittedly don’t shoot with enough guys. It’s something I’m hoping to experiment more with in the future. This was the only shoot I did this year with a guy and I think this is one of my favorite pictures of the year. Really dig the expression and the pose, just a really cool vibe.
OPHELIA
MODEL: DANIELLE ANDRES SCOTT
Always have fun working with Danielle. It was one of three shoots we’ve done in her flat in Glasgow (twice in 2017). I always like photos that feel like they've captured the subject in the middle of something. Plus the Buckfast bottle is a nice detail because what could be more Scottish then that.
DOPE UNICORN
MODEL: LILU
There’s a moment on a shoot sometimes where a model will just casually mention they own something and you just say, “We have to drop everything and shoot that right now.” In this case it was a Unicorn onesy.
SOLITUDE
MODEL: JADA ROSE
One of the things that drew me to photography in the first place was imagery that has an evocative mood.
lily W/ BARS
MODEL: INDIGO S
2017 was the year I started experimenting a lot with gels. It was also the year I moved to a flat with bars on the window.
CENSORED (nipple)
MODEL: NATASHA SAMSARA
I always like to find fun ways to play around with the idea of censored content. Especially since I always think there’s something very funny about the idea that a breast is still technically covered up if you can’t see a nipple.
IT’S A PANDA
MODEL: ALIX AUSTIN
I’m probably bias, I just think this photo is very cute.
BOOK NIRVANA
MODEL: DANI FORD
This was the second time I worked with Dani and I think this photo really shows we found a really easy chemistry. There just happened to be a whole bunch of old books staked against the wall and I thought it had a cool vibe. I’m always trying to work on my candid photography and I’m also always interested in the parts of the body we don’t see a lot, like bare thighs. It implies without showing which I think causes a much more evocative mental reaction.
I DON’T DO TOPLESS
MODEL: INDIGO S
I’ve been doing these cardboard sign photos for a while now and have gathered quite a lot. I always think they’re better though when they feel like a something that comes from, or feels personal to the model. Lily’s suggestion came from her own personal experience and that makes the image feel more charged to me.
BLUE IN FINSBURY
MODEL: NATASHA S
I actually went outside. It’s a rare occurrence so it has to be savored. Shot in the tunnel by Finsbury Park Tube Station, here I was experimenting with gels in an outdoor environment.
NEON and CROSS
MODEL: RACQUEL DYNEBRICK
I did quite a few experiments in overlaying images this year. I did more complicated ones then this, but I find the simplicity is actually the reason I like this one.
DOPE AS FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK
MODEL: LILU
I just like the attitude of this image. My advice with most things I shoot, don’t read into it too much.
URBAN HEIGHT
MODEL: HOLLY STONE
Wow, I went outside again. Just really like the perspective.
ORAL HYGIENE
MODEL: JADE LEMONADE
I’m always interested in the question of how nudity is sexualized or de-sexualized, I’ve tried experimenting a lot with the idea of nudity being presented in a mundane fashion.
NO BULLSH*T
MODEL: ISABELLA BONFRER
From the beginning, I’ve always done these wall shots. This was one of my favorites this year. Why? I don’t know. I just dig it, maybe just like the pose.
poison/KILLER
MODEL: JADA ROSE
This year I started writing words and symbols on the photo subjects. The words, mixed with the color and the expression here add up to an evocative portrait.
MOUSEKATEER
MODEL: DANIELLE ANDRES SCOTT
From the second shoot I did with Danielle this year. The image was inspired by an image of Courtney Love.
BAD ATTITUDE
MODEL: TALLULAH TUNNICLIFFE
Further experimenting with gels, I also like side-by-side images. I just also really like Tallulah’s stare in this photo. She just emotes a really cool intensity.
INSTAX AND CHILL
MODEL: JADE LEIGH
Photos with in photos, images with in images. The model becomes photographer. This are visual ideas I find interesting.
INVERT BLUE
MODEL: VALENTINA ULIVIERS
An experiment in inverting images, the trick has been finding the right color balance and I think I hit it here.
BLASPHEMY
MODEL: JADE LEMONADE
2017 was also the year I started experimenting a lot with taking Instax photos so I had to include one. It was one of the more simple ones but I felt it was effective. And yes, I deliberately smudged the ink on the photos.
BOU PUTS HER LEGS UP
MODEL: BOU CLETTE
I enjoy side by side images that compliment each other, especially when they're showing two body parts in a disembodied fashion. This one is particularly simple but I like when one informs the other.
DOA
MODEL: VALENTINA ULIVIERS
This was an image that just came out of free-form experimentation. It feels great when you hit on something by accident, just based on what’s lying around. There’s no grander idea to this, it’s just random but that’s what I dig about it.
INEVITABLE
MODEL: UHLEESHA NOIR
Shooting outdoors at night with a top light gives off a nice gritty effect, something I’m hoping to experiment more with in 2018.
LEATHER AND CIGARETTES
MODEL: LYSSA NOIR
Always have a great time working with Lyssa, honestly could’ve posted a lot of images with her, so this one was kind of picked as a place holder. As I said, always two images combined, one is the pose, the other is the candid moment.
